George A. Barnett received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Illinois, in Sociology, and his Ph.D. in Communication from Michigan State University (1976). Currently, he is Professor and Chair of the Department Communication at the University of California at Davis. He has previously taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Universities of Texas and Maryland, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has been editor of The Handbook of Organizational Communication, Organization<->Communication: Emerging Perspectives and Progress in Communication Sciences and served on numerous editorial boards. He has written extensively on organizational, mass, international and intercultural, and political communication, as well as the diffusion of innovations. His current research focuses on cognitive, communication and social networks from both a methodological perspective and a variety of substantive applications including the sociology of the field of communication, organizational processes, and international and intercultural communication where his research focuses on international telecommunications (telephone and the Internet) flows. Dr. Barnett was selected to deliver a workshop on cognitive networks to the National Communication Association (2008) and numerous workshops on network analysis to both domestic and international audiences. Currently, he is serving as President of the International Network for Social Network Analysis and the Editor of The International Encyclopedia of Social Networking.
