Mikayla Hughes comes to us from Michigan State University. She is interested in basic social influence research and the less conscious, more biased, and affect- infused aspects of information processing. In general, she is concerned with documenting when and why processing becomes more or less conscious and affect laden, and more specifically, how these processing differences may facilitate or inhibit social influence attempts. She has conducted research investigating the process of ego-defensive attitude formation initiated by the motive to protect the self from inconsistent and negative self-perceptions. In addition, she is concerned
with how the structure of attitudinal hierarchies impact attitude change and is investigating whether core values can be altered by evoking arguments based on several different specific issues that are all related to the same core value.
