Title: Goal Understanding is a Fundamental, Core, and Consequential Process of Communication.

Abstract: In this talk, I’ll argue how my recent collaborative efforts to assess the ways in which goal understanding manifests in a variety of communicative contexts and domains—from cyberbullying, relational escalation, relational discord, and teasing to health influence attempts, the processing of political messages, and perceptions of news articles about sexual assault—can elucidate general patterns of social cognitive processing with novel and meaningful outcomes. After reviewing some key constructs and background details, I’ll provide some exemplars of these collaborations. Then I’ll focus on providing a theoretical analysis of my research program that draws connections across the seemingly disparate studies currently at various stages, with infrequent references to data, with the goal of stimulating additional ideas in an open discussion format toward the end of my talk.
