About the Master's Degree Program

The M.A. program in the Department of Communications gives students a choice between thesis and non-thesis tracks.

The THESIS OPTION requires students to complete 32 units of coursework and carry out independent research, culminating in a thesis.

The NON-THESIS OPTION requires students to complete 40 units of coursework and pass a comprehensive examination that includes written and oral components.

Students earn the M.A. en route to their Ph.D. degree. We do not admit students who are interested only in a terminal master's degree.

If you wish to pursue the doctorate in communication:

You should apply directly to the Ph.D. program. A master's degree is not required for admission into the doctoral program.
