Professor Bell earned his doctorate degree in the College of Communication at the University of Texas, Austin in 1984. He was on the faculties at Northwestern University and the University of Pittsburgh before coming to UC Davis in 1987.
Dr. Bell has a long standing interest in communication and social influence processes. He has applied this interest in the domains of public health campaigns, prescription drug advertising, and physician-patient interaction. Dr. Bell has a joint appointment with the Department of Public Health Sciences. He is a member of the UCD Center for Advanced Studies in Nutrition and Social Marketing and the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research. His research has appeared in a wide variety of journals in communication, medicine, public health, and pharmacy. Dr. Bell has served on the editorial boards of several journals and reviews journal submissions regularly for many other journals. He regularly teaches courses in persuasion theory, health communication, research methods, and media and health.
