Research Focus

Rachel's research investigates the impact of new communication technologies on supportive communication, with a focus on how technology reshapes interpersonal communication processes and access to high quality mental health support. In one line of research, she evaluates language use and interaction dynamics in online environments to identify techniques for effective support seeking from both formal (e.g., psychologists, physicians, therapists) and informal (e.g., friends, family, online forums) sources. Building on these insights into effective interpersonal communication in online contexts, her second line of research explores how support seeking and provision techniques can be applied to human-AI interaction.

By evaluating the quality of human-AI and human-human mediated supportive interactions, her work has implications for improving access to high quality, tailored mental health support and assessing the utility of new communication technologies in health care.
