Dr. CJ Calabrese to Join Clemson University as an Assistant Professor in the Fall

Dr. CJ Calabrese, who received his PhD from the department in 2021, has accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Communication at Clemson University.

The UC Davis Department of Communication is proud to announce that Dr. CJ Calabrese, who earned his PhD in 2021, has accepted a position in the Department of Communication within the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences at Clemson University. Clemson is a research university (R1) located in South Carolina and is ranked as one of the top 30 national public universities. Dr. Calabrese is currently the Martin Fishbein Postdoctoral Fellow at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Calabrese’s research focuses on developing theoretically driven online network and social media interventions to promote preventative health behaviors. Recently, he developed a mobile app intervention to promote the adoption of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among gay and bisexual men. At Penn, he is examining new strategies to address misinformation and promote policy support and health behaviors. Dr. Calabrese’s research has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including Science Communication, Environmental Communication, Mobile Media & Communication, New Media & Society, Preventive Medicine, and Substance Use and Misuse.

As Dr. Calabrese wraps up his year at Penn, he said, “I am thrilled to be joining the Department of Communication at Clemson as an Assistant Professor in Health Communication. I am very thankful to my mentors and colleagues at Penn and UC Davis for their support.”

Dr. Jingwen Zhang, who served as Dr. Calabrese’s advisor, stated, “I am excited to see CJ embark on his new journey as an Assistant Professor. He is a great scholar!”

At Clemson, Dr. Calabrese will be joining Dr. Skye Wingate, who graduated from our department in 2020, in the Department of Communication.
