Dr. CJ Calabrese, an alumnus of the doctoral program in the Department of Communication at UC Davis, has received the Early Career Award from the Public Health Education and Health Promotion section of the American Public Health Association. The award recognizes scholars who make an outstanding contribution to public health through their research and leadership in the first ten years after receiving their doctorate. Dr. Calabrese’s award is particularly impressive given that he graduated with his PhD in Communication at the University of California, Davis in 2021. “I am very thankful and honored to receive this award, and I look forward to advancing this research program to further improve the health and wellbeing of our communities,” says Dr. Calabrese.
Dr. Calabrese’s research examines how new media and online technologies influence human behaviors and decision-making, particularly in the context of health. His most recent work focuses on developing social media and artificial intelligence (AI) interventions for addressing health misinformation while also promoting related preventive health behaviors. Dr. Jingwen Zhang, who served as Dr. Calabrese’s advisor, stated, “I am so proud of CJ’s continued success and growth as a scholar, collaborator, and leader. His research on leveraging online technologies to promote positive health behaviors is both innovative and highly impactful.”
Prior to his role as an Assistant Professor at Clemson University, Dr. Calabrese served as the Martin Fishbein Postdoctoral Fellow at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a three-time graduate of UC Davis, where he earned his PhD in Communication in 2021, his Master of Public Health in 2016, and his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2015.
