Graduate Student Awarded Scholarship to attend Oxford’s Internet Institute Summer Doctoral Programme

We are pleased to announce that 3rd Year Ph.D. candidate Saifuddin Ahmed has been awarded a place at the prestigious and competitive 2017 Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), University of Oxford. Out of the 30 participating students worldwide, Saif has also been selected to receive the OII's SDP scholarship, which will cover the full cost of his attendance at the summer programme.

Video Games a Viable Treatment for Depression

Video games and mobile applications are increasingly touted as an effective treatment for depression. A new UC Davis study by Subuhi Khan and Jorge Peña carries it a step further, though, finding that when the video game users were messaged reminders, they played the game more often and in some cases increased the time spent playing.

Graduate Student Selected for Honors Seminar

Third year Ph.D. candidate Cassandra Alexopoulos has been accepted into the 2016 National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Seminar to be hosted July 21-24 by the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

Alexopoulos is among 36 doctoral students from around the world, and one of a dozen in mass communication, selected for the competitive program.

Conference Spotlights Student Research

Four undergraduate students from the Department of Communication—Sarah Coon, Daniel Haddad, Matthew Laurie, and Sarah Pollock—showcased their research at the 27th Annual Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Conference held April 8–9.

Their research projects on multitasking in the classroom, online dating and effective email communication were conducted under the guidance of three Department of Communication faculty members: Professors Narine Yegiyan, Jorge Peña, and Bo Feng, respectively.

New Lecturer Looks at Interpersonal Communication - Face to Face and in Social Media

Students will see a new face around the Department of Communication this fall. Dr. Steven Brunner, an instructor at the University of Arizona, will join us as a lecturer.

He was hired after a keenly competitive nationwide search. He earned his Ph.D. in 2015 from the University of Arizona. A native of South Dakota, he earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from South Dakota State University.
